Are you seeing men in spandex more and more often at the gym recently? Well, it isn’t some weird tribute to the 80s, new research actually suggests that tights can actually help you avoid post-workout pains.
Jessica Hill, M.S.c. is a U.K. based exercise scientist and an author. “When compression garments are worn during and after heavy exercise, they appear to reduce muscle soreness.” So people who exercise with a tight suit on actually feel less pain, but also helps people recover faster.
So how do we explain all of this? When you work out a muscle, it can get inflamed. “When we experience an inflammatory response we get an increase in fluid and white blood cells to the affected area. This leads to swelling and increases in pressure, and therefore pain,” Hill explains.
Compression garments work by holding your body tightly together and helps your body recover. Other studies have also proven that this way to prevent soreness is extremely effective. Spanish scientist once asked soccer players to wear a compression sleeve on one leg and nothing on the other. When the match was over, the soccer players showed 27% fewer markers of soreness on the compressed leg than on the bare leg.
Another study in the U.K. showed that marathoners who wore compression tights felt less sore and ache free after 24 hours.
However, although compression gear feels great and can feel great afterward, it can be a bit… distracting for other people working out. It tells a lot of information if you know what we mean. Some good advice is to always treat compression tights like underwear. You should always wear it underneath some shorts at least.
