We don’t mean consuming alcohol during your exercises (who wants to see someone puke all over the place in the gym?). We mean… are you allowed to have any alcohol when you’re trying to get in shape?
Truth is, a lot of body builders don’t consume any alcohol because it’s just that bad for them. It’s full of empty calories and having one night of hungover fun could put you back a week or more in the gym.
Alcohol is something that true bodybuilders and anyone that’s trying to stay fit should stay away from. It does awful things for your muscles — it causes dehydration, bad recovery times, and decreases your metabolism.
Obviously, you’re not going to be drinking right before you go to the gym. But even having a few drinks 1 or 2 days before is bad. The calories alone in alcohol can be a setback to many people. Remember, 1 cup of beer has about 100 calories already. Usually, if you’re out with your friends, you can’t help but have 2-3 beers. And what about shots? 1 shot would have around 70 calories and that’s still a lot.
Sure, there are some benefits to drinking, like a cup of wine is good for your heart or whatever, but the adverse effects are way worse than what you’re getting out of it. If you’re going to choose between having a real good workout vs having a couple of cups of wine, then it’s definitely optimal to go for the workout. Don’t even think about it!
Not only that, it screws with your mind and protein synthesis as well as your hydration and cardiovascular health. Remember, the calories do add up and what you think you’re consuming to be a small snack could easily turn into a full Big Mac meal with fries!
If you want to be serious about taking care of your body, face the facts: Don’t drink.
